VIKINGS SOFTENING UP?! NO CAP, FUNCOM?!

Seriously?! Vikings…Softening Up?!

Okay, so lemme lay this out for y’all. We’re talking about the Vikings, right? Like, the OG raiders, the seafaring, axe-swinging, shield-walling legends? The folks who basically invented being extra? Their whole vibe was ā€œWe’re here to pillage, and we’re all outta surgar!ā€ – or something equally hype. They’re so iconic, we literally named a wireless communication protocol after them! Bluetooth? Yeah, that’s Viking-adjacent, fam. Came from a king who united tribes, a total power move.

And now? Now we got Funcom, the studio behind the upcoming Dune: Awakening, kinda… dipping on the whole PvP thing? Like, backing down from the battle scene ā€˜cause people weren’t really vibing with it? I’m losing my mind a little.

Apparently, the numbers don’t lie. Data dropped showing barely anyone was actually getting into the player-versus-player action. Eighty percent of players? More into the vibes of just, like, existing in the world, building, exploring, the whole PvE shebang. So Funcom is pivoting, leaning hard into that. Smart business, I get it. Keep the lights on, keep the server humming, all that.

But hear me out. This is a Viking game! Inspired by a culture built on challenge, on overcoming odds, on straight-up war. It’s kinda… wild. It’s giving major ā€œhistorical aesthetic but make it safeā€ energy. Like, imagine showing a Jarl this. He’d be spitting his mead.

Look, I’m not saying every game has to be a hardcore, sweat-inducing, rage-quit fest. Everyone’s allowed to chill. But there's a disconnect, ya know? You’re drawing from this fierce, unapologetic legacy, and then you’re basically handing out participation trophies.

It just highlights how tricky it is to blend history with modern game design. You wanna capture that awesome look and feel, but you also gotta make a game people actually wanna play. It's a whole mood, and honestly? It’s kinda hilarious. A culture famous for battle, now getting a game inspired by them… backing away from battle. The irony is chef’s kiss.

So yeah, Dune: Awakening is gonna be more about the exploration and building, apparently. It's a choice. A safe choice. And while I’m all for accessibility and a good time, a part of me will always wonder: What would Ragnar Lothbrok think? Probably something involving an axe and a disappointed sigh. Just sayin'.
